What are migraines?

Migraines are severe, recurring headaches that often cause pulsing or throbbing pain. Several factors contribute to developing migraines. If you experience migraine pain and need relief, turn to the experts at Hope & Esperanza Community Health Center to feel better and reduce the risk of future migraines.

What are the symptoms of migraines?

Common signs and symptoms associated with migraine pain include:

  • Severe head pain
  • Throbbing or pulsing pain
  • Pain on one side of your head
  • Light or sound sensitivity
  • Vomiting or nausea

Migraines might last 4-72 hours when left untreated. They can feel debilitating and prevent you from participating in daily activities.

What are the risk factors for migraines?

While migraines can happen to anyone, some factors increase your risk of developing them. Examples include:

  • Stress, anxiety, or depression
  • Loud sounds
  • Some medications
  • Strong smells
  • Hormone changes
  • Bright or flashing lights
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Tobacco or caffeine withdrawal
  • Sudden weather changes
  • Overexertion during exercise
  • Skipping meals or dehydration
  • Medication overuse
  • Some foods and additives

Migraines triggers include alcohol, chocolate, processed meats, other processed foods, aspartame, or monosodium glutamate (MSG). You’re more likely to develop migraines if you’re a woman, have a family history of migraines, or have epilepsy or sleep disorders.

How does my provider diagnose migraines?

To diagnose migraines or detect or rule out underlying medical problems, your provider discusses your medical history and symptoms. They complete physical and neurological exams and may recommend an MRI or CT scan.

What are common migraine treatments?

Common treatments for migraines include:

Lifestyle changes

Live a healthy lifestyle by getting plenty of sleep, exercising regularly, eating nutritious foods, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing stress, and avoiding highly processed foods and alcohol. Consider relaxation techniques and drink plenty of water.

Medications

Taking certain medications can reduce headache pain and your risk of getting migraines in the future.

Natural remedies

Vitamin B2, coenzyme Q10, magnesium, or other natural supplements may reduce your risk of developing migraine pain.
